Chapter Outline
Alternative methods of medication administration may be warranted when oral or parenteral routes are unavailable, when medications are poorly absorbed via the oral or parenteral routes, or when local effects are required. Other routes of medication administration may include the eyes, ears, nose, lungs, vagina, or rectum. As a nurse, you must be able to safely administer medications via any route ordered. This chapter will provide you with the necessary knowledge to demonstrate competence in administering medications via these identified routes.
