OpenStax also provides the option to access our Assignable learning platform through bookstore purchasing and affordability programs, often referred to as inclusive access. There are two ways for bookstores to obtain OpenStax Assignable access codes:
Order through VitalSource-powered programs
Barnes & Noble College, Akademos, eCampus, NACS, Slingshot, and ICBA member stores.
Follow your institution or bookstore’s standard process for selecting and listing course materials. Assignable access codes will appear in the system alongside other digital course material options. VitalSource is responsible for maintaining and distributing access codes.
- VitalSource is responsible for sharing the Assignable access codes with students once they have indicated they are using Assignable and for which textbook.
- Students will enter their access code directly into Assignable when prompted to pay.
- Students who participate in inclusive or automated VitalSource-powered programs do not need to pay for Assignable separately; the cost is included as part of their participation.
- You must list the correct Assignable ISBN in your bookstore catalog. This triggers VitalSource to send the access codes to students.
Order Assignable access codes directly through OpenStax
Use this process if your bookstore does not participate in a VitalSource-powered program.
- Complete the order form so we can send you an estimate.
- Once you receive your estimate, submit a purchase order (PO) to openstax@rice.edu. We’ll send you an invoice.
- Pay the invoice. We’ll then send you Assignable access codes.
- Add the Assignable ISBN(s) to your school's digital courseware catalog. Students can then purchase Assignable directly from your bookstore. Once a student has made their purchase, they should automatically receive the access code from your bookstore.
Please note that we do not currently support seamless integration for Assignable payment.
Assignable ISBNs
To add Assignable to your bookstore as a required resource, follow your institution or bookstore’s standard process for selecting and listing digital course materials.
Every OpenStax title has a unique Assignable courseware ISBN-13. Please be sure to enter the correct ISBN into your school’s digital courseware catalog.

All sales are final and non-refundable. Review your estimate carefully before submitting a purchase order.

The ordering steps above are for bookstore staff. Your bookstore will tell you how you will receive your OpenStax Assignable access code. If you have questions, reach out to them directly.
Once you receive your Assignable access code, simply sign in to your Blackboard, Canvas, D2L Brightspace, Moodle, or Schoology account. Once you click on your instructor’s course and navigate to your first assignment, you will be prompted to enter your access code. Please note that all students receive a two-week free trial. You can enter your access code before the trial ends.
If your school participates in Barnes & Noble College, you can opt out of that program using the Opt-Out tool in the First Day course before the posted deadline. Students who choose to opt out are still responsible for obtaining their course materials through another method.

2Providing OpenStax textbooks through campus access programs
OpenStax offers the option to access our peer-reviewed textbooks through bookstore purchasing and affordability programs, often referred to as inclusive access. We recommend following your institution or bookstore’s standard process for selecting and listing course materials in inclusive access programs.
Students can opt out of these programs, but they are still responsible for obtaining required course materials in another way.
